THIS IS A TONER THAT HAS THE IMAGING DRUM BUILT INTO THE CARTRIDGE ITSELF AND IS REPLACED AS ONE WHOLE UNIT.  THERE IS NO SEPARATE DRUM.

Not Recognizing

There is a smart chip connector on the side of the cartridge that the printer uses to recognize the cartridge.  Check to make sure this connector is not damaged and that there is no dirt or debris present which may be causing a poor connection.

Make sure the cartridge is properly installed and fully inserted into the printer.

To remove and install the cartridge into a Xerox 440 Digital Copier printer do the following;

–          Slide the Finisher and/or High Capacity Feeder away from the machine (if equipped).

–          To open the Duplex Module door, release the lever located at the front of the Duplex Module, release the lever located at the front of the Duplex Module (if equipped).

–          Release the handle to open the upper left door.

–          Pull the left front cover open towards you.

–          Holding the colored lever, slide the cartridge out until you can take hold of the handle on top of the cartridge.

–          Using the handle, lift the cartridge out of the machine.

–          Holding the new cartridge by its handle, slide it into the frame in the machine.  Let go of the handle as you slide the print cartridge all the way to the back of the frame.  It must click into place.

–          Pull the sealing tape from the cartridge to release the toner.

–          Close the left front cover.  Close the upper left cover.  If equipped, close the duplex module and slide the finisher and high capacity feeder back into place.

Print Quality Issues

Hold the toner cartridge horizontally and gently shake it 5 to 6 times to evenly distribute the toner inside.

Be sure that the pull tape seal on the cartridge has been pulled out.  This should done while the cartridge is installed in the printer to lessen the chance of any toner powder leakage.

The OPC drum is located on the front of the cartridge covered by a spring loaded plastic shutter.  Lift the shutter up to view the drum.  Do NOT touch the OPC drum.  You can use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to gently clean the drum.  Do NOT use moisture of any kind.

Not Fitting

Verify they have the correct cartridge for their specific printer model.  Make sure the cartridge is being installed in the correct orientation.  Check inside the printer for any obstructions that may be causing the cartridge not to fit.  Check the cartridge itself for physical damage.
