THIS IS A TONER THAT HAS THE OPC DRUM BUILT INTO THE CARTRIDGE ITSELF AND IS REPLACED AS ONE WHOLE UNIT. THERE IS NO SEPARATE DRUM UNIT.
There are 4 colors in this series; Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.
The Q6470A Black is used in both the Laserjet 3600 and 3800. The colors; Q6471A, Q6472A, and Q6473A are used in the Laserjet 3600. The colors; Q7581A, Q7582A, and Q7583A are used in the Laserjet 3800. The color series for the 3600 are not interchangeable with the 3800 and vice versa.
Not Recognizing
Verify they have the correct cartridge for their specific printer model.
There’s a smart chip located on the front of the toner cartridge which has two gold connection points. Make sure the chip is clean and undamaged. You can use a dry, clean, lint-free cloth to clean the connections.
Ensure the cartridge is being installed correctly and is fitting properly into the printer. If the cartridge isn’t fully inserted the chip will not make proper contact with the printer sensor.
To remove and install these toner cartridges in the Color Laserjet 3600 and 3800 printers do the following;
– Open the front door.
– Make note of the different locations of the color cartridges. Remove the color needing replacing from the printer.
– Make sure you have the correct color cartridge for the color being replaced. Align the print cartridge the tracks inside the printer, and using the handles, insert the print cartridge into the correct color slot until it is firmly seated.
– Firmly close the front door.
Print Quality Issues
There is a pull tape seal on each side of the cartridge which must be removed prior to installation. It is important that this pull tape seal is fully removed from the cartridge. If the cartridge is printing blank pages or printed 2-3 pages and is now printing blank then the pull tape seal has not been removed or has broken off inside the cartridge while being removed.
There are orange plastic protective rings which must be removed from the cartridge prior to installation.
Holding the cartridge by its ends, gently rock the cartridge left to right a few times to evenly distribute the toner powder inside the cartridge.
The OPC drum is located on the front of the cartridge and is protected by a spring loaded plastic cover. Gently lift the plastic cover up and visually check the OPC drum for damage or debris. Do not touch the OPC drum. A clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth can be used to gently wipe the OPC drum if needed. Do not use moisture of any kind.
If the toner is smearing off the paper or isn’t adhering properly, make sure the paper settings on the printer match the paper type being used. Thicker paper, such as labels or bonded paper, require a different paper setting to allow more heating while printing to ensure the toner melts properly to the paper. Trying to print on thicker paper while under that standard paper setting will cause the toner not to get enough heat to melt properly.
During the printing process, paper, toner, and dust particles can accumulate inside the printer. Over time, this build up can cause print quality issues, such as toner specks or smearing. These printers have a cleaning mode that can correct and prevent these types of issues. The cleaning mode will NOT resolve print quality issues such as lines or streaking. To run the cleaning do the following;
– Press MENU.
– Press ▼ to highlight CONFIGURE DEVICE, and then press the check mark.
– Press ▼ to highlight PRINT QUALITY, and then press the check mark.
– Press ▼ to highlight CREATE CLEANING PAGE, and then press the check mark.
– Remove all paper from tray 1.
– Remove the cleaning page and load it face-down in tray 1.
– At the printer control panel, press ▼ to highlight PROCESS CLEANING PAGE, and then press the check mark.
Not Fitting
Verify they have the correct cartridges for their specific printer model. Make sure the correct color is being installed into the correct slot. Check that the orange plastic protective rings and pull tape seal have been removed from the cartridge. Check inside the printer for any obstructions. Check the cartridge itself for physical damage.
