INK TANK – The print heads are NOT integrated, do NOT perform the paper towel method.

These are compatible cartridges; there will be appearance differences from the OEM cartridges.  These differences will not affect the function of the cartridges.

Not Recognizing

Verify they have the correct cartridges for their specific printer model.

These cartridges do not use smart chips.  Instead, the printer has an optical sensor that determines if a cartridge is present.  Gently rock the cartridge to redistribute the ink inside the cartridge, be sure to cover the vent hole and nozzle with a paper towel to prevent ink leakage.  Sometimes, air bubbles can cause false readings and rolling the cartridge will help remove them.  For ink levels the printer uses an ink dot counter that counts the ink dots printed onto the pages printed to calculate what the ink level will be at.  This ink dot counter is reset when a new cartridge is installed and Yes is selected when the printer asks if a new cartridge is installed.

Be sure that the correct color is being installed into the correct color slot.  Also, check to make sure the cartridge is fully seated and snapped into place.

To remove and install the cartridges in a Brother MFC-7400c printer do the following;

–          Press Ink Management.

–          Press ◄ or ► to choose 2. Replace Ink.

–          Press Set.

–          Open the control panel and lift the top cover.

–          Remove the ink cartridge by pulling it toward you and lifting it up and out of the print head.  Make sure to make note of the different locations of the different colors

–          Each color has its own correct position.  Insert the new cartridge into the carriage using the color indicator on the cartridge holder as a guide.  Make sure the correct color is installed in the correct slot.

–          After installing the cartridge, close the top cover and control panel cover.  The printer prepares for a “head cleaning”.  This display screen prompts you to verify a new ink cartridge was inserted for each color you replaced.

–          For each new cartridge, press 1 on the dial pad to reset the ink dot counter for that color automatically.  The printer will enter a cleaning cycle for approx. 3 minutes for each replaced color.  The display screen alternately shows CLEANING and PLEASE WAIT.

–          When finished, the display returns to the standby mode.

Print Quality Issues

Slowly and carefully remove the foil tape on the bottom of the cartridge.  This opens the vent hole and nozzle on the bottom of the cartridge.

For any print quality related issue a print head cleaning should be performed.  Try to determine which color the defect is occurring in.  Print a test page and see if the problem is only occurring with one color or if it is occurring across all the colors.  To print a print quality test page on a MFC-7400c do the following;

–          Press Function, 2, 1.

–          Press START.  The printer will print the test page.

–          Press STOP to exit.

Two cleanings may be required to resolve a print quality problem.  If the second cleaning does not resolve the issue try running a third cleaning but allow the printer to sit for 10 minutes before attempting to print.  This allows the ink to soak on the print head.  To perform a print head cleaning on a MFC-7400c printer do the following;

–          Press Ink Management.

–          Press 1 to choose 1. CLEANING.

–          Press ◄ or ► to choose the color you want to clean and press SET.  The printer will clean the print head.

Remove the cartridge and cover the vent hole with a paper towel.  Check the nozzle on the front to ensure that it has been properly punctured.  Check the slot in the printer to make sure there is no debris which may be interfering with the ink flow.

Not Fitting

Verify they have the correct cartridge for their specific printer model.  Check to make sure the correct color is being installed into the correct slot.  Make sure the cartridge is pushed all the way down and that the cartridge cover is clicked into place.  Ensure they have the cartridge in the right direction.
