THIS IS A TONER THAT HAS THE OPC DRUM BUILT INTO THE CARTRIDGE ITSELF AND IS REPLACED AS ONE WHOLE UNIT.  THERE IS NO SEPARATE DRUM UNIT.

Not Recognizing

Verify they have the correct cartridge for their specific printer model.

There’s a smart chip located on the front of the toner cartridge which has three gold connection points.  Make sure the chip is clean and undamaged.  You can use a dry, clean, lint-free cloth to clean the connections.

Ensure that the toner cartridge is properly installed and fully inserted.

To remove and install the toner cartridge into the Canon Imageclass D1180 printer do the following;

–          Push the open button.

–          Open the front cover.

–          Remove the toner cartridge.

–          Align the new toner cartridge to the guides in the printer and slide the cartridge completely into the printer until it stops.

–          Close the front cover.

Print Quality Issues

There is a pull tape seal on the side of the cartridge that must be removed prior to installation.  It is important that this seal is completely removed.  If the customer is saying the cartridge is printing blank pages or after 2-3 pages it is now printing blank then the pull tape seal has not been removed or has broken off inside the cartridge while being removed.

There is a piece of black paper held on by tape which wraps around the OPC drum that will need to be removed.

The OPC drum is located on the bottom of the cartridge covered by a spring loaded plastic shutter.  Lift the shutter up to view the drum.  Do NOT touch the OPC drum.  You can use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to gently clean the drum.  Do NOT use moisture of any kind.

Holding the cartridge by its ends, gently rock the cartridge back and forth a few times to redistribute the toner inside the cartridge.

If the toner is smearing off the paper or isn’t adhering properly, make sure the paper settings on the printer match the paper type being used.  Thicker paper, such as labels or bonded paper, require a different paper setting to allow more heating while printing to ensure the toner melts properly to the paper.  Trying to print on thicker paper while under that standard paper setting will cause the toner not to get enough heat to melt properly.

If black streaks appear with printing, the Fixing Unit in the main unit may be dirty.  The Fixing Unit should be cleaned each time the toner cartridge is replaced.  To clean the Fixing Unit do the following;

–          Press Menu.

–          Press ◄ or ► to select <ADJUST./CLEANING>, then press OK.

–          Press ◄ or ► to select <FIX.UNIT CLEANING>, then press OK.

–          Press ◄ or ► to select <CLEAN PAPER PRT>, then press OK.

–          Press ◄ to select <YES>.  The cleaning page will print.

–          Load the cleaning page in the multi-purpose tray with the printer side facing down.

–          Perform from step 1 to step 3 again.

–          Press ◄ or ► to select <START CLEANING>, then press OK.

–          Press ◄ to select <YES>.  The cleaning will start by loading the cleaning pages through the printer.  Throw away the cleaning pages once complete.

Not Fitting

Verify they have the correct cartridge for their specific printer model.  Make sure the cartridge is being installed in the correct direction.  Check inside the printer for any obstructions that may be interferring with the installation of the toner cartridge.  Check the toner cartridge itself for physical damage.  Verify that the pull tape seal has been removed from the side of the cartridge.
