THIS IS AN INK CARTRIDGE WITH THE PRINT HEAD INTEGRATED.

The black Xerox 8R7881 is pigment based ink.

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific model printer.

The cartridge uses a page counter on the printer which must be manually reset when the cartridge is replaced.  If the cartridge is still reading low or empty then this page counter was not reset when the cartridge was installed.

There may be a piece of tape present on the cartridge that covers the print head and some of the contacts.  Make sure this piece of tape has been removed if it’s present.

Using a coffee filter or a lint-free cloth gently wipe the gold/copper connection points found on the side of the cartridge.  Sometimes if dried ink, finger print oil, or some of the tape residue stays on the contacts it can cause the cartridge not to recognize.

Not Fitting

There’s a protective clip on the outside of the cartridge which must be removed.  If the cartridge looks too big the protective clip probably has not been removed.  The clip will just snap off the cartridge.

To remove and install this cartridge into a Xerox Workcentre 490CX printer do the following;

–          Lift open the Control Panel cover by pulling up on the Control Panel.

–          Open the Cartridge Compartment Cover by lifting up on the recessed handle.  The Cartridge Carrier Assembly moves to the center of the printer.

–          Locate the black ink cartridge holder inside the printer.  The black ink cartridge holder is located on the right side of the cartridge carrier assembly and can be identified by a black key tab.

–          Remove the old black cartridge and then slide the new black cartridge down into the holder.  Push down until it clicks down into place.

–          Close the Cartridge Compartment Cover.  CARTRIDGE CHANGED? appears on the display.

–          Press the ▲ or ▼ button until Black appears in the display.

–          Press the START button.  RIGHT CARTRIDGE? appears in the top line of the LCD display.

–          Press the ▲ or ▼ button until NEW BLACK CARTRIDGE appears in the lower line of the display.

–          Press the START button to confirm your choice.  The Cartridge Carrier Assembly moves back to the docking position.  A cartridge alignment page will print out.

Print Quality Issues

The print head is located on the bottom of the cartridge.  Do NOT touch the print head with your fingers.  Verify the piece of tape has been removed.

Take a warm damp paper towel or coffee filter and blot the cartridge with the print heads facing down onto the paper towel to remove the dried ink on the print head. Then, taking a DRY paper towel or coffee filter, hold the cartridge down against the paper towel for 2-3 minutes. A dry paper towel will wick the ink out. Do not wipe the print head as this may cause damage.

After performing the paper towel method, clean the print nozzles through the printer using the built in nozzle cleaning feature.  To run this cleaning do the following;

–          Press the MENU button, then press 1 + 2 buttons on the keypad.

–          Press the START button.  The display indicates SELF TEST?

–          Press the ▲ button.  CLEAN HEAD? appears in the LCD display.

–          Press the START button.  PRINTING…. appears on the LCD display.  The printer will print a head cleaning test pattern.
