These toner cartridges do not have the OPC drums built into them.  The drum unit is a separate unit that’s built into the printer.  These are very basic toners that slide into the side of the printer.

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific printer.

There is a smart chip located on the top of the cartridge.  Check the chip for damage or debris.  A soft, dry, lint-free cloth can be used to gently clean the four gold contacts.

Make sure the cartridge is installed properly and that the cartridge is fully inserted.  Push the cartridge until it clicks into place.

Verify that the correct color cartridge is being installed into the color slot.  The picture below shows the side of the printer with the left side being the front of the printer and the right side being the back of the printer.

Print Quality Issues

There is an orange piece of tape covering the toner hole on the cartridge which must be removed prior to installation.

Try shaking the cartridge five or six times to redistribute the toner powder inside the cartridge.

NOTE:  If the orange tape has already been removed, make sure they cover the hole the toner comes out of to prevent toner powder leakage.

For minor specks or dots on the page there is a cleaning port behind each cartridge to insert a cleaning rod that’s provided in the printer to clean out excess toner.  Remove the toner cartridge to gain access to the cleaning port.  The cleaning rod is on the left side with a blue handle.  Pull the cleaning rod out from its holder built into the printer.  Insert the cleaning rod into the port and move in and out several times.  Do this for all the cartridges.

Look at the outputted pages to see if the print defect is occurring with a particular color or if it’s happening across all the colors.  For example, if lines are appearing just in the areas cyan are used then troubleshoot the cyan cartridge.

Ghosting, lines, streaks, and repeating image defects are issues with the drum unit.  The drum unit on this printer is built into the printer itself and is designed to last the life of the printer.  Dell has many cleaning options available through the Printer Software Toolbox included on the CD that comes with the printer.  Refer to the User’s Manual for the printer for the different cleaning tools available within the printer.
