THIS IS A TONER THAT HAS THE OPC DRUM BUILT INTO THE CARTRIDGE ITSELF AND IS REPLACED AS ONE WHOLE UNIT.  THERE IS NO SEPARATE DRUM UNIT.

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific printer model.

There is no smart chip on this cartridge.  Instead, the cartridge uses electrical current inside the toner to sense the presence of toner powder.  Shaking the toner can help extend the life of near empty cartridges and remove the Replace Toner message until the cartridge is too empty for shaking to make an effect.

Verify that the cartridge is installed properly and that the front cover to the machine is fully closed.

To install the FX6 into a Canon Laser Class 3170 series printer do the following;

–          Lift the document feeder tray, the document output tray, and the upper output tray.

–          Open the printer cover to remove the old cartridge and discard it.

–          Load the new cartridge in the direction indicated by the arrow.  Gently slide the cartridge into the printer until it is completely down inside the fax unit and level.

–          Close the printer cover.

Print Quality Issues

There is a pull tape seal on the side of the cartridge which must be removed prior to installation.  It is important that this pull tape seal is fully removed.  If the cartridge is printing blank pages or if the cartridge printer 2-3 pages and now is printing blank, then the pull tape seal hasn’t been removed or has broken off inside the cartridge while being removed.

Rock the cartridge 5 or 6 times to redistribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

If the toner is smearing off the paper or isn’t adhering properly, make sure the paper settings on the printer match the paper type being used.  Thicker paper, such as labels or bonded paper, require a different paper setting to allow more heating while printing to ensure the toner melts properly to the paper.  Trying to print on thicker paper while under that standard paper setting will cause the toner not to get enough heat to melt properly.

The OPC drum is located on the bottom of the cartridge protected by a spring loaded plastic shutter.  Lift the shutter to visually inspect the OPC drum for damage or debris.  Do NOT touch the drum.  A soft, clean, dry, lint-free cloth can be used to gently clean the OPC drum if needed.  Do NOT use moisture of any kind.

Not Fitting

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific printer model.  Make sure the cartridge is being installed in the correct direction.  Check inside the printer for any obstructions that may be interfering with the installation of the toner cartridge.  Check the toner cartridge itself for physical damage.  Verify that the pull tape seal has been removed from the side of the cartridge.
