THESE CARTRIDGES DO NOT HAVE THE OPC DRUM UNIT INTEGRATED.  THERE IS A SEPARATE, REPLACEABLE, DRUM UNIT THAT THE CARTRIDGES INSTALL INTO.

These are the higher capacity versions of the Brother TN110 cartridges

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct cartridges for your specific model printer.

There is no smart chip on the cartridges.  Instead, when installed there is a gear on the cartridge called the “flag gear” that trips an actuator inside the printer and resets the page count.  Once the printer counts a certain amount of pages, it will give the message to replace the cartridge or a toner life end message.  Try removing and re-installing the toner cartridge as sometimes the actuator doesn’t catch the flag gear right.  If the problem persists check the flag gear position found on the left side of the cartridge.  The flag gear cannot be reset without disassembly of the toner cartridge so if it’s in the wrong position you will need a replacement cartridge.

You may be able to manually override the toner count.  This doesn’t necessarily work on all printers but here are two procedures that have worked on a couple;

For MFC Series

  1. With power on, open the toner access main door. You will get a “Cover is Open” message on the LCD.
  2. Press the “Clear/Back” button and you will be taken to the toner “Reset Menu”
  3. You can then scroll through the reset options for the printer’s toner cartridges:
    1. B.TNR-S – Black toner small cartridge (TN-110)
    2. B.TNR-H – Black toner high-capacity cartridge (TN-115)
    3. C.TNR-S – Cyan toner small cartridge (TN-110)
    4. C.TNR-H – Cyan toner high-capacity cartridge (TN-115)
    5. M.TNR-S – Magenta toner small cartridge (TN-110)
    6. M.TNR-H – Magenta toner high-capacity cartridge (TN-115)
    7. Y.TNR-S – Yellow toner small cartridge (TN-110)
    8. Y.TNR-H – Yellow toner high-capacity cartridge (TN-115)
    9. Select the cartridge size you have and the color you want to reset, and press OK.
    10. Each cartridge must be reset individually. Press “1″ to reset.
    11. Press “Clear/Back” to get out of the menu, then close the door.

For HL Series;

  1. Open the front cover of the printer
  2. Press and hold the cancel button
  3. Press the reprint button while still holding cancel
  4. Here is the reset menu
  5. Go to the appropriate cartridge on the menu and reset it.

These cartridges install into a drum carriage which is a separate replaceable maintenance item.  The drum carriage is one complete unit that has a slot for each color.  Make sure the correct color toner is being installed into the correct color slot on the drum carriage.

To remove and install the toner cartridges into a Brother HL-4040 series printer do the following;

NOTE:  Other Brother printers that use the TN110/TN115 cartridges will be a similar process.  For exact instructions for a specific printer model the User’s Guides are available for review on Brother’s website.

–          Press the front cover release button and then open the front cover.

–          Hold the green handle of the drum unit.  Lift the drum unit up and then pull it out until it stops.

–          Hold the handle of the toner cartridge being replaced and pull it out of the drum unit.  Repeat this for all the toner cartridges that need replacing.

–          Hold the handle of the new toner cartridge and slide the toner cartridge into the drum unit.  Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum unit and make sure that you fold down the toner cartridge handle once the toner cartridge is in place.

–          Put the drum unit back into the printer.

–          Close the front cover of the printer.

Print Quality Issues

There’s a plastic cover on the front of the cartridge that must be removed prior to installation.

Hold the cartridge with both hand and gently rock it five or six times to spread the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

On the drum unit, each color has its own corona wire which can be cleaned via a green tab.  To clean the corona wires the toner cartridge will need to be removed for the color being cleaned.  Once removed, push to relase the latches of the white corona wire cover and then open the cover.

Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.  NOTE:  Be sure to return the tab to the home position ▲.  If the tab is not fully in the home position then a vertical stripe will appear on printed pages.

Almost all ghosting, lines, and streaks are drum related.  The drum unit is separate from the toner cartridges and is a maintenance item that will need replacing after a certain period of usage.

If the toner is smearing off the paper or isn’t adhering properly, make sure the paper settings on the printer match the paper type being used.  Thicker paper, such as labels or bonded paper, require a different paper setting to allow more heating while printing to ensure the toner melts properly to the paper.  Trying to print on thicker paper while under that standard paper setting will cause the toner not to get enough heat to melt properly.

Try printing some test pages to see if you can determine what defect is occuring and see if it is only occuring with a particular color.  On the front of each toner cartridge is a rubber roller that distributes the toner powder to the drum, check this rubber roller for damage or debris.  Do NOT touch the rubber roller or use moisture of any kind.

Not Fitting

Verify you have the correct cartridges for your specific printer model.  Make sure that you are installing the toner cartridges into the existing drum unit inside the printer.  If the cartridge(s) appear too small you may not be installing the cartridges into the drum.  Verify the correct color is going into the correct color slot in the drum unit.
