This is an EXTRA high yield version of the standard yield TN720 and high yield TN750 toner cartridges and only works with the HL-6180 Series and MFC-8950 Series printers.

The TN780 toner cartridge and DR720 drum unit are two separate units that are sold individually.  The drum unit generally needs replacing after 4-6 toner cartridge changes.  When replacing the toner cartridge the old drum unit MUST be separated from the old toner cartridge and re-used with the new toner cartridge unless a new drum is being installed as well.

This is a compatible cartridge, so there will be appearance differences from the OEM.  These differences will not affect the function.

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct toner cartridge or drum unit for your specific printer model.

The toner cartridge uses a flag gear to hit an actuator inside the printer and reset the page count for the toner.  Be sure that the cartridge is fully inserted into the printer.  Also, try removing and reinstalling the toner cartridge.

Not Fitting

The toner cartridge and drum unit are two separate pieces that install into each other.  When replacing the toner cartridge you MUST remove the old drum unit from the old toner cartridge and re-use it with the new toner cartridge.  Install the new toner cartridge into the old drum unit before installing them into the printer.  If the customer is saying the toner is too small then they probably are attempting to install the toner cartridge on its own without the drum unit.  Make sure they install the toner into the drum first then install into the printer.

To remove and install the TN780 toner cartridge and DR720 drum unit in a Brother HL-6180 printer do the following;

Note:  Other Brother printers that use this toner and drum unit will be a similar procedure.  If you want specific instructions for a particular Brother printer model please review the User’s Guide for that particular printer.  The User’s Guides are available for free on Brother’s website.

–          Press the front cover release button and then open the front cover.

–          Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly as one piece.

–          Push down the lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

–          Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.  You will be re-using the old drum unit with the new toner cartridge.

–          Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the printer.

Print Quality Issues

On the TN780 toner cartridge there is an orange plastic protective cover on the front of the cartridge which must be removed prior to installation.

On the TN780 toner cartridge, check the rubber roller for damage or debris.  Do NOT touch the rubber roller or use moisture of any kind around the toner cartridge.

On the DR720 drum unit with the toner cartridge removed, check the OPC drum for damage or debris.  Do NOT touch the OPC drum or use moisture of any kind around the drum.

On the DR720 drum unit try cleaning the primary corona wire.  On the front of the drum unit there is a tab.  Gently slide this tab left to right a few times to clean the primary corona wire.  Make sure to return the tab back to its home position.  If it is not returned to the home position then a verticle stripe will appear on printed pages.

.

Try gently rocking the toner cartridge from side to side a few times to evenly distribute the toner powder inside the cartridge.

If your printout has white or black dots at 3.7” intervals, the drum may have foreign material, such as glue from a label stuck on the drum surface.  To help isolate and resolve this issue there is a drum dot check sheet that can be printed.  To print this, do the following;

–          Press ▲ or ▼ to choose Machine Info and press OK.

–          Press ▲ or ▼ to choose Drum Dot Print.  Press OK to print the drum do check sheet.

A sheet will print with numbered columns to help isolate where on the drum the debris is.

Once you isolated in which column the dot is occurring, do the following to resolve the problem;

–          Turn off the printer.

–          Press the front cover release button and then open the front cover.

–          Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.

–          Push down the lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.

–          Turn the drum unit over.  Make sure that the drum unit gear (1) is on the left hand side.

–          Grab your drum dot check sheet you printed earlier.  Use the numbered markers next to the drum roller to find the mark based on which column the dots appeared on the check sheet.  For example, a dot in column 2 on the check sheet would mean that there is a mark in the “2” region of the drum.

–          Turn the drum unit gear toward you by hand while looking at the surface of the suspected area.

–          When you have fond the mark on the drum that matches the drum dot check sheet, wipe the surface of the drum gently with a cotton swab until the mark on the surface comes off.  Do NOT use moisture of any kind and do NOT touch the drum with your fingers.

–          Put the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

–          Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the printer.

–          Close the front cover of the printer.

–          Turn the printer on.

The drum unit is a maintenance item and will need to be replaced after a period of usage.  Ghosting, streaking, and lines are generally a drum related issue.
