THIS IS A TONER THAT HAS THE OPC DRUM BUILT INTO THE CARTRIDGE ITSELF AND IS REPLACED AS ONE WHOLE UNIT.  THERE IS NO SEPARATE DRUM UNIT.

The CF280X is the high capacity version of the CF280A toner cartridge.  The 280X is physically larger than the 280A.

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific printer model.

There’s a smart chip located on the back of the toner cartridge which has two gold connection points.  Make sure the chip is clean and undamaged.  You can use a dry, clean, lint-free cloth to clean the connections.

Ensure that the toner cartridge is properly installed and fully inserted.

To remove and install the toner cartridge into the Laserjet Pro 400 series printers do the following;

–          Open the toner cartridge door, and then remove the toner cartridge.

–          Align the new toner cartridge with the tracks inside the printer, insert the toner cartridge until it is firmly seated, and then close the toner cartridge door.

Print Quality Issues

There is a pull tape seal on the side of the cartridge that must be removed prior to installation.  It is important that this seal is completely removed.  If the cartridge is printing blank pages or after 2-3 pages it is now printing blank then the pull tape seal has not been removed or has broken off inside the cartridge while being removed.

Holding the cartridge by its ends, gently rock the cartridge back and forth a few times to redistribute the toner inside the cartridge.

The OPC drum is located on the bottom of the cartridge covered by a spring loaded plastic shutter.  Lift the shutter up to view the drum.  Do NOT touch the OPC drum.  You can use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to gently clean the drum.  Do NOT use moisture of any kind.

If the toner is smearing off the paper or isn’t adhering properly, make sure the paper settings on the printer match the paper type being used.  Thicker paper, such as labels or bonded paper, require a different paper setting to allow more heating while printing to ensure the toner melts properly to the paper.  Trying to print on thicker paper while under that standard paper setting will cause the toner not to get enough heat to melt properly.

Toner and paper particles can accumulate in the paper path that may give print quality issues.  There is a cleaning function on the printer that can resolve this issue.  To run this cleaning do the following;

–          From the Home screen on the control panel, touch the Setup button.

–          Touch the Service menu.

–          Touch the Cleaning Page button.

–          Load plain white paper when you are prompted.

–          Touch the OK button to begin the cleaning process.  The printer prints the first side and then prompts you to remove the page from the output bun and reload it in Tray 1, keeping the same orientation.  Wait until the process is complete.  Discard the page that prints.

Not Fitting

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific printer model.  Make sure the cartridge is being installed in the correct direction.  Check inside the printer for any obstructions that may be interferring with the installation of the toner cartridge.  Check the toner cartridge itself for physical damage.  Verify that the pull tape seal has been removed from the side of the cartridge.
