THESE CARTRIDGES DO NOT HAVE THE OPC DRUM UNIT INTEGRATED.  THERE IS A SEPARATE, REPLACEABLE, DRUM UNIT THAT THE CARTRIDGES INSTALL INTO.

There are four colors to this series of toner cartridges; Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.

These are the higher capacity versions of the Brother TN331 cartridges

Not Recognizing

Verify they have the correct cartridges for their specific model printer.

There is no smart chip on the cartridges.  Instead, when installed there is a gear on the cartridge called the “flag gear” that trips an actuator inside the printer and resets the page count.  Once the printer counts a certain amount of pages, it will give the message to replace the cartridge or a toner life end message.  Try removing and re-installing the toner cartridge as sometimes the actuator doesn’t catch the flag gear right.

These cartridges install into a drum carriage which is a separate replaceable maintenance item.  The drum carriage is one complete unit that has a slot for each color.  Make sure the correct color toner is being installed into the correct color slot on the drum carriage.

To remove and install the toner cartridges into a Brother HL-L8250CDW series printer do the following;

NOTE:  Other Brother printers that use the TN331/TN336 cartridges will be a similar process.  For exact instructions for a specific printer model the User’s Guides are available for review on Brother’s website.

–          Make sure that the printer is turned on.  Press the front cover release button and pull open the front cover.

 tn336j

–          Hold the blue handle of the drum unit.  Pull the drum unit out until it stops.

 tn336c

–          Hold the handle on the toner cartridge and gently push it toward the printer to unlock it.  Then pull it out of the drum unit.  Repeat this for any additional colors you are replacing.

 tn336d

–          Make sure you are placing the correct color into the correct color slot.

 tn336e

–          Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slide the toner cartridge into the drum unit then gently pull it toward you until you hear it lock into place.

 tn336f

–          Push the drum unit in until it stops.

 tn336g

–          Close the front cover.

Print Quality Issues

There’s a plastic cover on the front of the cartridge that must be removed prior to installation.

 tn336h

Hold the cartridge with both hand and gently roll it five or six times to spread the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

There may also be a piece of black paper held on by tape that needs to be removed.

 IMG_4080

On the drum unit, each color has its own corona wire which can be cleaned via a green tab.  To clean the corona wires the toner cartridge will need to be removed for the color being cleaned.  Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from left to right and right to left several times.

 tn336i

Be sure to return the tab to the home position (1).  If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.

If your printout has white or black dots at 3.7 inch intervals, the drum may have foreign material, such as glue from a label or paper dust, stuck on the drum surface.  Follow the steps to solve the problem;

–          Make sure the printer is in the Ready mode.

–          Press the ▲ or ▼ to choose Machine Info and then press OK.

–          Press the ▲ or ▼ to choose Drum Dot Print.  Press OK to print the drum dot check sheet.

–          Press and hold down the power button to turn the printer off.

–          Press the front cover release button and pull open the front cover.

 tn336j

–          Hold the blue handle of the drum unit.  Pull the drum unit out until it stops.

 tn336k

–          Turn the blue lock lever (1) at the left of the printer counterclockwise to the release position.  Holding the blue handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit and remove it from the printer.

 tn336l

–          Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and gently push it toward the printer to unlock it.  Then pull it out of the drum unit.  Repeat this for all the toner cartridges.

 tn336m

–          Turn the drum unit over by holding the blue handles.  Make sure that the drum unit gears (1) are on the left side.

 tn336n

–          Refer to the Drum Dot Check sheet you printed earlier.  The color of the printed dots are the color of the drum you will need to clean.  The sheet has eight numbered columns.  The number of the column with the printed dot in it is used to find the dot position on the drum.

–          Use the numbered markers next to the drum roller to find the mark.  For example, a cyan dot in column 2 on the check sheet would mean that there is a mark in the “2” region of the cyan drum.

 tn336o

–          Turn the drum unit gear and the edge of the drum unit toward you using both hands while looking at the surface of the suspected area.

 tn336p

–          When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the drum dot check sheet, wipe the surface of the drum gently with a cotton swab until the mark on the surface comes off.

 tn336q

–          Hold the handle of the toner cartridge and slide it into the appropriate colored section of the drum unit until you hear it lock into place.

tn336r

–          Make sure the blue lock lever (1) is in the release position as shown in the illustration.

 tn336s

–          Gently slide the drum unit into the printer until it stops at the blue lock lever.

 tn336t

–          Turn the blue lock lever (1) clockwise to the lock position.

 tn336u

–          Push the drum unit in until it stops.

 tn336v

–          Close the front cover of the printer.

–          Turn on the power switch.

Almost all ghosting, lines, and streaks are drum related.  The drum unit is separate from the toner cartridges and is a maintenance item that will need replacing after a certain period of usage.

Not Fitting

Verify they have the correct cartridges for their specific printer model.  Make sure that they are installing the toner cartridges into the existing drum unit inside the printer.  If they are saying the cartridge(s) are too small they are probably not installing the cartridges into the drum.  Verify the correct color is going into the correct color slot in the drum unit.
