THESE TONER CARTRIDGES DO NOT HAVE INTEGRATED DRUMS. THERE IS A SEPARATE, REPLACEABLE, DRUM UNIT FOR EACH COLOR.
There are four colors to this series of toner cartridges; Black, Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.
MAKE SURE TO SEPARATE THE DRUM UNIT FROM THE OLD TONER CARTRIDGE WHEN REPLACING. THE NEW TONER CARTRIDGE MUST BE USED WITH THE EXISTING DRUM UNIT. IF THE CUSTOMER SAYS THE NEW TONER IS TOO SMALL, THEN THEY DID NOT SEPARATE THEIR EXISTING DRUM UNIT FROM THEIR OLD TONER CARTRIDGE.
Not Recognizing
Verify they have the correct cartridges for their specific model printer.
Drum units always require manual resetting of the drum life
There is no smart chip on the toner cartridges. Instead, when installed there is a gear on the cartridge called the “flag gear” that trips an actuator inside the printer and resets the page count. Once the printer counts a certain amount of pages, it will give the message to replace the cartridge or a toner life end message. Try removing and re-installing the toner cartridge as sometimes the actuator doesn’t catch the flag gear right.
It is possible to also sometimes override and reset the toner through the printer. Here are some examples, if you find additional instructions for other printers please report them through the Missing Bicycle option under the Error Reporting section of the CSR Blog.

For example purposes, here is how to replace the toner cartridges in a Brother HL-3140CW printer. Other printers that use these toner cartridges will be a similar process. If you require specific instructions or details for a different printer, please refer to the user guide for that printer. The user’s guides are available as PDFs for free on Brother’s website.
– Make sure the printer is turned on.
– Open the top cover until it locks in the open position.
– Take out the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly for the color you are replacing.
– Push down on the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. You will be re-using this drum unit with the new toner cartridge.
– Put the new toner cartridge firmly into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you install it correctly, the green lock lever on the drum unit will lift automatically.
– Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times. Be sure to return the tab to the home position ▲. The arrow on the tab must be aligned with the arrow on the drum unit. If it is not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.
– Slide the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly into the printer. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the printer.
– Close the top cover of the printer.
Print Quality Issues
If the new toner cartridge color is printing lightly try removing the toner cartridge from its drum unit. Hold the cartridge level with both hands and gently roll it from side to side several times to spread the toner evenly inside the cartridge.
If you are getting light or faded colors, white streaks, or bands down the page clean the LED heads as follows;
– Press and hold down the power button to turn the printer off.
– Open the top cover until it locks in the open position.
– Wipe the windows of the LED heads (1) with a dry, lint-free cloth. Be careful not to touch the windows of the LED heads (1) with your fingers.
– Close the top cover to the printer.
If the printouts have white or black dots at 3.7 inch intervals, the drum may have a contaminant on it. This can be a speck of paper dust or glue from label paper. To try to diagnose and solve this, do the following;
– Make sure the printer is in Ready mode.
– Press the ▲ or ▼ to choose Machine Info. Press OK.
– Press the ▲ or ▼ to choose Drum Dot Print. Press OK to print the drum dot check sheet.
– Press and hold down the power button to turn the printer off.
– Open the top cover until it locks in the open position.
– The color of printed dots is the color of the drum you should clean. Take out the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly of the color causing the problem.
– Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.
– Turn the drum unit upside down. Make sure that the drum unit gear (1) is on the left side.
– The drum dot check sheet printed earlier has eight numbered columns. The number of the column with the printed dot in it is used to find the dot position on the drum.
– Use the numbered markers next to the drum roller to find the mark. For example, a dot in column 2 on the check sheet would mean that there is a mark in the “2” region of the drum.
– Turn the edge of the drum unit toward you by hand while looking at the surface of the suspected area.
– When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the drum dot check sheet, wipe the surface of the drum gently with a cotton swab until the mark on the surface comes off.
– Put the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you install the cartridge in correctly, the green lock lever on the drum unit will lift automatically.
– Slide the toner cartridge and drum unit assembly into the printer. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge color to the same color label on the printer.
– Close the top cover of the printer.
– Turn the printer on.
Not Fitting
If the toner cartridge appears too small, make sure that it is being installed into the drum unit. Each color has its own drum unit and the drum unit must be re-used with the new toner cartridge. If the cartridge looks like the image below, then the drum has NOT been separated from the toner cartridge.
There is an orange plastic protective clip that must be removed.
Verify they have bought the correct cartridge for their specific printer model.
