THIS IS A TONER THAT HAS THE OPC DRUM BUILT INTO THE CARTRIDGE ITSELF AND IS REPLACED AS ONE WHOLE UNIT.  THERE IS NO SEPARATE DRUM UNIT.

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific printer model.

Samsung has a reputation of doing stealth firmware updates, where they disguise a firmware update as a routine update.  A firmware update may lock out the use of aftermarket cartridges.  Usually when a firmware updates goes through cartridges that were once working will no longer read and/or a cartridge gives an incompatible error and you try others (reships, multiples in the same order, etc) which also won’t recognize.  We do not recommend updating the printer’s software or firmware when using our cartridges as doing so may lock out the use of our cartridges.

There’s a smart chip located on the side of the cartridge.  Visually check the chip for damage or debris.  You can use a clean, dry, lint-free cloth or Q-tip to gently clean the four gold contact points.

Verify the cartridge is being installed correctly and that it is fully inserted into the printer.

To remove and install this toner cartridge into a Samsung ML-2165W series printer do the following;

–          Open the top cover to the printer.

–          Grabbing the toner cartridge by its handle, lift it up and out of the printer.

–          Hold the new toner cartridge by its handle, fit the tabs on the side of the toner cartridge into the channels located inside the printer.  Push the toner cartridge down into the printer, making sure it fully seats into place.

–          Close the top cover of the printer.

Print Quality Issues

There is a black plastic protective cover on the front of the toner cartridge which wraps around and covers the OPC drum.  Make sure this black protective cover is removed prior to installation.

There is a black piece of paper held on by tape which must be removed prior to installation.  Make sure this paper has been removed.

Slowly shake the cartridge five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

The OPC drum is located on the front of the cartridge.  Visually check for scratches or debris on the drum.  Do NOT touch the OPC drum.  If need be, clean the OPC drum using a dry, soft, lint-free cloth.  Do NOT use moisture of any kind.  There is no protective drum shutter on this cartridge to protect the OPC drum so caution must be taken in handling this cartridge to prevent damage to the drum.

If the toner is smearing off the paper or isn’t adhering properly, make sure the paper settings on the printer match the paper type being used.  Thicker paper, such as labels or bonded paper, require a different paper setting to allow more heating while printing to ensure the toner melts properly to the paper.  Trying to print on thicker paper while under that standard paper setting will cause the toner not to get enough heat to melt properly.

During the printing process, paper, toner, and dust particles can accumulate inside the printer.  This buildup can cause print quality problems such as toner specks or smearing.  Cleaning the inside of the printer clears and reduces these problems.  To clean the inside the printer, do the following;

–          Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.

–          Open the top cover to the printer and remove the toner cartridge.

–          Using a soft, dry, lint-free, cloth wipe the toner area of the printer and make sure it’s free of any debris or dust.  Do NOT use moisture of any kind.

–          Install the toner cartridge back into the printer.

–          Close the top cover to the printer.

–          Re-connect the power cord to the back of the printer.

Leaking

This toner does not have any pull seal tabs and as a result a little toner dust on the cartridge is normal.  Vibrations during shipping may cause the OPC drum to rotate a little and allow a little toner powder to leak.  This is normal.  You can clean excess toner dust off the cartridge by gently wiping the cartridge with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth or gently blowing on it.  Be careful with compressed air as this may blow too powerfully and blow toner powder out of the cartridge.
