THIS IS JUST A DRUM UNIT. THE TONER CARTRIDGES ARE SEPARATE, REPLACEABLE, MAINTENANCE ITEMS.
The drum unit comes installed inside a protective alignment housing that is used to install the drum unit into the printer so that the OPC drum doesn’t get damaged during installation. This protective alignment housing does NOT install into the printer, rather just helps with sliding the drum unit itself into the printer.
There is one drum unit for each color, four in total.
Not Recognizing
Verify you have the correct drum unit for your specific printer model.
There is a smart chip located on the inside end of the drum unit. Check the chip for damage or debris. You can use a Q-tip to reach and clean the four gold contacts.
To remove and install this drum unit into a Xerox Pro 40 Series printer do the following;
– Open the front cover.
– Lift up on the lever marked ‘A’ located on the left front side of the drum.
– Pull down on the release handle to unlock the drum cartridge lock and access the four drum cartridges.
– Gently remove the drum cartridge needing replacing (A1=Black, A2=Cyan, A3=Magenta, A4=Yellow), by grasping the light orange tab on the cartridge handle and pulling it straight out.
– Rest the new drum cartridge along with its black plastic protective shield into the cartridge slot. Make sure to load the cartridge in the direction of the arrow on the top of the shield and with the bottom of the shield resting on the release handle. Remove the tape on the top if present.
– Hold the drum cartridge shield and push the cartridge into the machine using the light orange tab. Remove the shield from the machine.
– Lift up the release handle in the middle to lock the drum cartridge.
– Push the lever marked ‘A’ handle latch down until it locks.
– Close the front cover. If the front cover is not completely closed a message will be displayed and the machine will not operate. Dispose of the protective shield.
Print Quality Issues
Look at the prints to try to determine what the print quality issue is and see if it is only occurring with one color or if it is occurring across the entire page.
For issues with light or white lines in the print the laser windows may be dirty. To clean the laser windows do the following;
– Open the front cover on the machine and remove the cleaning rod from inside of the front cover panel.
– Pull down on the colored tabs on the right and left side of the machine to open the black cover.
– Grasp the center section of the waste toner container, and pull the bottle out. Be careful not to spill any toner.
– Gently insert the cleaning rod into cleaning slots D1 to D4 (square holes) with the pad facing down. When the cleaning rod has gone in as far as possible, gently pull it out towards you.
– Cleaning each of the four locations. NOTE: Dirt on the cleaning pad is almost impossible to see. Store the cleaning rod inside the front cover panel when done.
– Re-install the waste toner container back into the machine. Make sure the center section of the container is properly aligned.
– Close the black cover by holding the colored tabs on the left and right and pushing up.
– Close the front cover.
If a particular color appears to be printing lightly then the toner may be low for that color. Try removing the toner cartridge from the printer and gently shaking it to redistribute the toner. Reinstall the toner cartridge and try printing again. If the issue is resolved, then the toner cartridge will need replacing soon. The toner cartridge is separate from the drum unit.
If the defect is occurring across all the colors then the issue is within the printer. It could be a bad fuser.
Not Fitting
Verify you have the correct drum unit for your specific printer model. Make sure you are replacing the drum unit and not the toner cartridge. Check inside the printer for obstructions. Check the drum unit itself for physical damage.
