THIS IS A TONER THAT HAS THE OPC DRUM BUILT INTO THE CARTRIDGE ITSELF AND IS REPLACED AS ONE WHOLE UNIT.  THERE IS NO SEPARATE DRUM UNIT.

Not Recognizing

Verify they have the correct cartridge for their specific printer model.

This toner cartridge installs in the Optra L and Optra R series printers, below is a reference picture of these printers.

This is an older toner cartridge that installs into long discontinued printers.  There is no smart chip on this cartridge.  Make sure that the cartridge is fully inserted into the printer.

Lexmark no longer supports the printers that use this cartridge so unfortunately the User’s Guide is no longer available for download.  The cartridge can be accessed by opening the front door on the printer and pulling the toner from the printer.

Print Quality Issues

There is a piece of cardboard that covers the plastic shutter and OPC drum on the bottom of the cartridge.  Remove this piece of cardboard before installation.

The OPC drum is located on the bottom of the toner cartridge protected by a spring loaded plastic shutter.  Lift the plastic shutter to visually inspect the OPC drum.   Do NOT touch the OPC drum.  Check the drum for damage or debris.  A soft, dry, clean, lint-free cloth can be used to gently wipe the OPC drum.  Do NOT use moisture of any kind.

If the toner is smearing off the paper or isn’t adhering properly, make sure the paper settings on the printer match the paper type being used.  Thicker paper, such as labels or bonded paper, require a different paper setting to allow more heating while printing to ensure the toner melts properly to the paper.  Trying to print on thicker paper while under that standard paper setting will cause the toner not to get enough heat to melt properly.

Holding the cartridge by its ends, gently rock the cartridge a few times to redistribute the toner powder inside.  Sometimes the toner powder can become compacted inside the cartridge.

Leaking

There is no pull tape seal on this cartridge so a little toner leakage is normal.  During shipping vibrations may cause the OPC drum to rotate a little and release some powder.  The protective cardboard piece on the bottom helps absorb some of this loose toner.  You can gently blow the cartridge with air before installing.  If there is an excessive amount of toner leakage then a new cartridge should be reshipped.

Not Fitting

Verify they have the correct cartridge for their specific printer model.  Check inside the printer for obstructions.  Make sure the protective cardboard was removed from the bottom of the toner cartridge.  Check the cartridge itself for physical damage.
