INK TANK – The print heads are NOT integrated, do NOT perform the paper towel method.

These are compatible cartridges; there will be appearance differences from the OEM cartridges.  These differences will not affect the function of the cartridges.

The LC65 black is physically thicker than the LC65 color cartridges.  These are the high capacity versions of the LC61 cartridges, however the LC65 black cartridges are not compatible in all the printers that use the LC61s so verifying they have the correct cartridge for their specific printer is important.

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct cartridges for your specific printer model.

These cartridges do not use smart chips.  Instead, the printer has an optical sensor that looks at a “window” on the front of the cartridge that’s visible when you push in the black clip on the front of the cartridge.  Try gently rolling the cartridge to redistribute the ink inside of the the cartridge and to ensure there are no air bubbles present that may give a false reading.

Be sure that the correct color is being installed into the correct color slot.  Also, check to make sure the cartridge is fully seated and snapped into place.

To install the cartridges in a Brother MFC-6490W printer do the following;

NOTE:  Other Brother printers that use the LC65 cartridges are a similar process.  For exact instructions on other Brother printer models you can view their User’s Guides on Brother’s website.

–          Open the ink cartridge cover.  Press down to unlock the release lever and take out the cartridge(s) that need replacing.

–          Insert the new cartridge into the printer, making sure the correct cartridge is being installed into the correct color slot.  Firmly push on the cartridge until it clicks into place then close the ink cartridge cover.

–          For each cartridge installed the printer will ask if a new cartridge was installed.  Press 1 for each new cartridge that was installed to reset the ink dot counter for that color.  The printer will automatically charge the new ink.

Print Quality Issues

Do NOT remove the clear piece of plastic covering the nozzle on the front of the cartridge.  The printer will puncture this during installation.  Make sure to remove the yellow tape on the top of the cartridge.  This opens a vent hole.

For any print quality related issue a print head cleaning should be performed.  Try to determine which color the defect is occurring in.  Print a test page and see if the problem is only occurring with one color or if it is occurring across all the colors.  Two cleanings may be required to resolve a print quality problem.  If the second cleaning does not resolve the issue try running a third cleaning but allow the printer to sit for 10 minutes before attempting to print.  This allows the ink to soak on the print head.  To perform a print head cleaning on a MFC-6490W printer do the following;

–          Press Ink

–          Press the up or down arrows to choose Cleaning.  Press OK

–          Press the up or down arrows to choose either Black, Color, or All depending on which print head needs cleaning.  Press OK to begin the cleaning process

For print head cleaning instructions on other Brother printers that use the LC65 cartridges the User’s Guides are available on Brother’s website.

Remove the cartridge and cover the vent hole with a paper towel.  Check the nozzle on the front to ensure that it has been properly punctured.  Check the slot in the printer to make sure there is no debris which may be interfering with the ink flow.

Not Fitting

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific printer model.  Check to make sure the correct color is being installed into the correct slot.  Sometimes these cartridges may need to be pushed more firmly than the OEMs to click into place properly.  Ensure you have the cartridge in the right direction and then re-install while pushing firmly until the cartridge clicks into place.
