INK TANK – The print heads are NOT integrated, do NOT perform the paper towel method.
These are compatible cartridges; there will be appearance differences from the OEM cartridges. These differences will not affect the function of the cartridges.
Not Recognizing
Verify you have the correct cartridges for your specific printer model.
These cartridges do not use smart chips. Instead, the printer has an optical sensor that looks into a small reservoir on the front of the cartridge. Make sure there is ink present in this small reservoir and that there are no air bubbles that may be given a false reading. Gently rocking the cartridge forward and back can help get the ink into the reservoir, be sure to cover the vent hole and nozzle with a paper towel to prevent ink leakage.
Be sure that the correct color is being installed into the correct color slot. Also, check to make sure the cartridge is fully seated and snapped into place.
To remove and install the cartridges in a Brother MFC-5440CN printer do the following;
NOTE: Other Brother printers that use the LC41 cartridges is a similar process. For exact instructions on other Brother printer models you can view their User’s Guides on Brother’s website.
– Lift the scanner cover from the right-hand side of the MFC until it locks securely into the open position.
– Press on the ink cartridge release tab and remove the cartridge.
– Insert the new cartridge into its correct color slot. Keep the cartridge in an upright position when you insert it into the slot. Press down on the ink cartridge until it snaps into place.
– Lift the scanner cover to release the lock. Gently push the scanner cover support down and close the scanner cover.

Print Quality Issues
There is a yellow piece of tape on the top of the cartridge which must be removed prior to installation. This opens a vent hole to help allow the ink to leave the cartridge properly. Do NOT remove the clear piece of plastic covering the nozzle on the bottom. The printer will puncture this during installation.
For any print quality related issue a print head cleaning should be performed. Try to determine which color the defect is occurring in. Print a test page and see if the problem is only occurring with one color or if it is occurring across all the colors. To perform a print head cleaning on a MFC-5440CN printer do the following;
– Press Ink.
– Use the up and down arrows to select Cleaning. Press Menu/Set.
– Use the up and down arrows to select Black, Color, or All depending on which color the defect occurred in. Press Menu/Set.
For print head cleaning instructions on other Brother printers that use the LC41 cartridges the User’s Guides are available on Brother’s website.
Remove the cartridge and cover the vent hole with a paper towel. Check the nozzle on the bottom to ensure that it has been properly punctured. Check the slot in the printer to make sure there is no debris which may be interfering with the ink flow.
Not Fitting
Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific printer model. Check to make sure the correct color is being installed into the correct slot. Make sure you are installing the cartridge in the correct orientation, turn the cartridge around and try it again.
