THESE CARTRIDGES DO NOT HAVE THE OPC DRUM UNIT INTEGRATED.  THERE IS A SEPERATE DRUM UNIT WHICH IS A REPLACEABLE MAINTENANCE ITEM.

Not Recognizing

Verify they have the correct drum unit for their specific model printer.

There is no smart chip on the cartridges.  Instead, when installed there is a gear on the cartridge called the “flag gear” that trips an actuator inside the printer and resets the page count.  Once the printer counts a certain amount of pages, it will give the message to replace the cartridge.

The drum unit is a separate item from the toner cartridge and must be re-used.  If the the cartridge is not fitting or is too small then you are probably not installing the cartridge into the separate drum unit.  Verify you have separated the old drum unit from the old toner cartridge and are re-using the drum unit with the new toner.

Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit

.

The installation of the toner cartridge into the drum is the reverse.  You want to push the toner down until you feel it click into place.

The cartridge and drum unit assembly installs into the printer as one piece.  Make sure the assembly is fully inserted into the printer.

On some of the HL Series printers (for example the HL-2280DW) you can reset the toner life if the printer does not do so automatically.  To do this, do the following;

– Open the front cover of the printer

– Press and release the “clear” key

– Press “start”, then press the up arrow until you see the number 12 on the display

– Press “ok”, you will see “accepted” on the display

– Close the front cover

On the HL-2270DW you can reset the toner life by doing the following;

Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps.
– Turn the printer off.
– Hold the ‘go’ button while turning the printer on. All lights should be on.
– Release the ‘go’ button (or “start’ button).
– Press the ‘go’ button (or “start’ button) 2 times.
– Pause. All panel lights should be on.
– Press the ‘go’ button (or “start’ button) 5 times.
The toner light should be off. (error may be flashing)
The paper light should be on or flashing.
– Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.

For the MFC-7860dw and MFC-7360n;

Open door

press Clear/Back key

press *00

press OK

Do not choose anything for drum replacement. when drum replacement menu comes up, just press the * and then 00, then just press OK and close door.

Print Quality Issues

There’s a plastic cover on the front of the cartridge that must be removed prior to installation.  There is also a black piece of paper that wraps around the roller on the cartridge that must be pulled out.

Holding the cartridge by its ends, gently rock the cartridge left to right a few times to re-distribute the toner powder inside the cartridge.

The cartridge uses a small rubber roller to distribute toner powder onto the OPC drum roller in the drum unit that physically puts the images to paper.  You can check the rubber roller on the cartridge itself for any cracks or defects.  Most print quality problems such as streaking, lines, ghosting, etc., will be an issue with the drum unit which is a separate replaceable item.  The drum unit will generally need to be replaced after about 4-6 toner cartridge changes.

Try cleaning the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the green tab from left to right and right to left several times.  Ghost images are always a drum related issue.

Grinding

Remove and re-install the toner cartridge.  Make sure the toner cartridge is fully seated inside the drum unit.  Be sure that the toner and drum assembly are fully inserted into the printer.  Excess toner or debris on the gears of the drum unit may also cause grinding, a can of compressed air can be used to clean the gears.

Not Fitting

The drum unit is a separate item from the toner cartridge and must be re-used.  If the the cartridge is not fitting or is too small then you are probably not installing the cartridge into the separate drum unit.  Verify you have separated the old drum unit from the old toner cartridge and are re-using the drum unit with the new toner.

Make sure you have the correct toner cartridge for your particular printer model.  If your drum unit is a DR400, you have the WRONG toner cartridge.

This toner cartridge is a compatible toner cartridge which means it will look differently and may fit differently than the OEM.  This will NOT affect performance.
