***These may be eChip cartridges, look for the overlay on the contacts***

THIS IS AN INK CARTRIDGE WITH THE PRINT HEAD INTEGRATED.

The PG black cartridges are pigment based ink.  The CL tri-color cartridges are dye based ink.

The PG30 and CL31 are moderate yield cartridges, the PG40 and CL41 are standard yield cartridges, and the PG50 and CL51 are high yield cartridges.  Verify with the printer model on which cartridges it can accept as not all the cartridges will work with a particular printer.

Not Recognizing

Verify you have the correct cartridge for your specific model printer.

The ink levels will NOT read correctly.  These cartridges will read low or empty.  With Canon printers the printer will not print with the cartridge reading low or empty.  To override this do the following;

          Step 1: Upon installation of a new ink cartridge a warning message may appear to confirm that installation has taken place. Press OK to continue.

          Step 2: Upon sending the first print job to the printer an additional warning may appear instructing you to either cancel or resume printing without the ink detection function. In order to clear the warning DO NOT CLICK the OK or Cancel Printing buttons and proceed to step 3.

          Step 3:  Hold down the STOP/RESUME button for 5 seconds to turn ink level system off. Printer will go through a startup sequence which may take a few minutes.

The printer will NOT print faxes when the cartridge is reading low or empty.  You will need to change the settings in the printer to override this and allow faxes to continue to print.  To do this;

To set AUTO PRINT to ON, please follow these steps.
Press the <FAX> button to enter the Fax menu.

Press the <Menu> button. [FAX SETTINGS] is displayed

Press the left or right arrow button to select [RX SETTINGS] , then press <OK> two times.

Press the left arrow to select [ON], then press <OK>.

Note: When AUTO PRINT RX is set ON, a sub-menu will appear to PRINT WHEN NO INK.

At sub-menu PRINT WHEN NO INK, decide if you’d like the machine to continue to print incoming received faxes if ink is low.

There is a piece of tape that covers the print head on the bottom and wraps around to cover the contacts on the side.  Make sure the piece of tape has been removed.

Using a coffee filter or a lint-free cloth gently wipe the gold/copper connection points found on the side of the cartridge.  Sometimes if dried ink, finger print oil, or some of the tape residue stays on the contacts it can cause the cartridge not to recognize.

Not Fitting

There’s a protective clip on the outside of the cartridge which must be removed.  If the cartridge looks too big the protective clip probably has not been removed.  The clip will just snap off the cartridge.

Make sure you are installing the black into the black slot in the printer and the color into the color slot.  The cartridges have tabs on the top which will only allow the cartridge to fit into the correct slot.  There are many different Canon printers that use these cartridges so verify with the User’s Manual the correct cartridge orientation.

Print Quality Issues

The print head is located on the bottom of the cartridge.  Do NOT touch the print head with your fingers.  Verify the piece of tape has been removed.

Take a warm damp paper towel or coffee filter and blot the cartridge with the print heads facing down onto the paper towel to remove the dried ink on the print head. Then, taking a DRY paper towel or coffee filter, hold the cartridge down against the paper towel for 2-3 minutes. A dry paper towel will wick the ink out. Do not wipe the print head as this may cause damage.

Some of the Canon printers have a print head or cartridge cleaning function.  Check with the User’s Manual for the specific printer to see if this cleaning is available and how to use it.
